Tarkio (pop. 1,494) is located at the intersection of Hwy. 59 and Hwy. 136, seven miles off of I-29. Tarkio is home to the former Tarkio Tech (formerly Tarkio College) and Heartland Recreation Center, and boasts a number of historic homes. Active community groups include Tarkio Chamber of Commerce, and Tarkio Rotary. Tarkio R-I (K-12) cooperates with Fairfax as the East Atchison Wolves for athletics.
Tarkio Renewal, a 501(c)3 organization established in 2006, is a group of community volunteers whose focus is the elimination of dangerous and dilapidated buildings and general beautification of the community.
